When the bus finally arrives, Teddy and I climb aboard. As soon as the other kids see me they start whispering to each other.

I grip my schoolbag and rush all the way to the backseat. Teddy and I sit here so we can look out the back door at the moving traffic. Usually, we make silly faces at the drivers in the cars behind us, but not today.

I’m trying to be on my best behavior and ask myself, What would Grandpa do? He probably wouldn’t make silly faces, that’s for sure.

After a good amount of time, the bus finally pulls up to Fork Lane Elementary School.

Yep, my school is on a street called Fork Lane. It always makes me think of eating. How could it not?

Anyway, once we get inside, Teddy and I walk to our classroom. Our teacher, Mr. Karas, is writing something on the board.

Mr. Karas is a tall man, with a beard and glasses. Sometimes he brings his guitar into class to help us learn by singing songs.

As soon as we are seated, Mr. Karas claps his hands to get us to quiet down.

“May I have your attention, please?” he says. “I have some very exciting news. News so exciting, that it will literally have you jumping for joy!”

Mr. Karas starts jumping up and down. “Come on, everybody,” Mr. Karas says. “Jump!”

Teddy is the first one out of his seat. He starts jumping up and down too. I start laughing and join my teacher and my best friend.

“Excellent, Billy and Teddy!” Mr. Karas says. “Who’s next?”

Michael and Jason and some of the other kids join in the fun.

Polly, the class know-it-all, raises her hand. “Mr. Karas, did you have jumping beans for breakfast? What are you doing?” she asks.

“I’m jumping for joy, Polly,” Mr. Karas answers. Then he starts hopping on one foot. “Now I’m hopping on one foot,” he says.
